Payroll and System Auditing

Payroll Input Review/Audit


Conduct a Policy and Procedure Review, to identify any potential Payroll related exposure areas, which will entail a discussion-based review of all your Payrolls, practices and employee benefits. The Review will involve the following:

  • Mimicking a full SARS Payroll Audit by initiating interviews with the relevant Payroll and HR staff by means of utilizing the latest SARS Audit Questionnaire

  • Reviewing all policies, rules, GL reports and/or agreements that may impact Payroll, to identify potential risks in terms of the prevailing Tax Legislation and Protection of Personal Information Legislation

  • Utilizing each source document to determine the required Payroll input (ito policy interpretation per legislation and SARS practice) and conducting a compliance comparison with the relevant Business Requirement Specification (BRS) issued by SARS

  • Informal mapping of processes to ensure accurate Payroll reporting between all relevant stakeholders

  • Supplying a detailed Recommendation Report on any potential risk area identified and a reasonable estimate quantification of the financial risk in relation to the potential risk area

Payroll System Review/Audit


This review will entail a comprehensive review of the Payroll System, together with all related processes and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and best practice. The Review will involve the following:

  • Data Element Review whereby we will analyse each element and source code within the system, to determine whether they agree to the your Business Policies and Rules

  • Verify each element within the system to the source code requirements as per the SARS BRS

  • Testing of the Mapping Rules for each element andsource code within the system to ensure correct and accurate reporting as per prevailing Tax Legislation and Protection of Personal Information guidelines

  • Supplying a detailed Recommendation Report on any potential risk area identified and a reasonable estimate quantification of the financial risk in relation to the potential risk area SARS Account

Payroll Output Review/Audit:


This review will entail a thorough checking of all the outcome generated by the System, such as the Reports, Calculations and integration with third parties. The Review will involve the following:

  • Report verifying (only in the event that the System Payroll Review has not been selected in the package)

  • Select samples of x10 employees across difference levels and benefit packages, per payroll, and conducting a complete recalculation of each payslip for the relevant tax period

  • Compare your Business Policies, Rules, SARS BRS and Tax Legislation requirements to each report,  payslip and tax calculation

  • Conduct a SARS Account Maintenance check per Payroll

  • Supplying a detailed Recommendation Report on any potential risk area identified and a reasonable estimate quantification of the financial risk in relation to the potential risk area
